Hall of Fame Applesauce Pie

HALL OF FAME APPLESAUCE PIE


Crust
2-2/3 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup Crisco shortening
1 tsp sugar
7-8 Tbls cold water plus 2 tsp vinegar
Make pastry and line a 9” pie plate. Pour applesauce mixture into crust. Roll remaining pie crust out and cut into 1/2 inch strips. Arrange lattice design over filling. Crimp edges.

Filling
8 – 10 Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped
1 large lemon, sliced & seeded.
2 cups sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp salt
½ cup packed brown sugar
3 Tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla extract

For the filling: First 6 ingredients over medium heat, stirring often, 30-35 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat and remove lemon. Add butter and vanilla extract.
Cool.
Bake at 425 DEGREES for 30 -35 minutes or until golden brown. Shield pie with aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning.
